Austria Destinations

On our trip to Germany, we also planned to stay half of the time in Austria. We stayed in Salzburg and took a day trip to Vienna and a day trip to Hallstatt.

Hohensalzburg Fortress perched atop Festungsberg hill, overlooking the city of Salzburg, Austria, with its medieval stone walls and towers dominating the skyline above the baroque Old Town.

Salzburg

This was our first time visiting Salzburg, so we decided to see so many things! We went to the top of Hohensalzburg Fortress, which has the best views of the city.

We went to the Mozart’s Birthplace and Residence museums.

We spent 4 days in Salzburg and had fun trying new to us restaurants.

Vienna

While we only visited Vienna for a day, we really made the most of our time!

We visited Schönbrunn Palace first thing in the morning, which is one of the best things to do while you’re in Vienna.

We also ate sachretorte and apple struedel at Cafe Sacher and rode the giant ferris wheel at Prater!

Katie standing on the Welterbeblick World Heritage Skywalk platform at Hallstatt Salt Mine (Salzwelten), with expansive views of Hallstatt village, Hallstätter See, and the surrounding alpine peaks behind her. The glass platform offers a thrilling and scenic perspective high above the valley.

Hallstatt

Hallstatt took a bit to travel to. We had to navigate a train ride, then a bus ride to get there. We visited in Winter, but if you travel during summer you get to take a boat ride.

We toured the oldest salt mine in the world and had lunch at Zur Ruth.
