It was built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard, but was later expanded and renovated over the centuries. The fortress defended Salzburg during the medieval period, and was used as a residence by the archbishops. It offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding mountains.

Stunning Views of Salzburg
From the fortress’s ramparts and towers, you can get panoramic views of the historic city center, the Salzach River, and the surrounding Salzburg Alps. Salzburg is stunning – this did not disappoint! You can see many historic buildings and landmarks of the city, including the Residenz Palace and Schloss Mirabell.
We didn’t get to see the city at night, but I’ve seen images and it looks amazing as well.

Getting to Hohensalzburg Fortress
The most straightforward way to reach Hohensalzburg Fortress is by taking the funicular railway from Salzburg’s Old Town. It’s quick, easy, and offers a bit of fun on the way up. However, if you’re up for a bit of exercise and want to take in more of the scenery, walking is a great alternative.
Ride the Funicular
The funicular railway is the most popular and convenient way to reach Hohensalzburg Fortress. It takes you from the base of Festungsberg hill in Salzburg’s Old Town to the fortress in just under a minute.
The lower station of the Festungsbahn is located at Festungsgasse 4, near Kapitelplatz Square, which is a central part of Salzburg’s Old Town.
You can purchase tickets for the funicular at the station or online. The ticket often includes entrance to the fortress and its museums. Combination tickets are available that cover the funicular ride and entrance fees.
The funicular operates year-round, but hours may vary depending on the season. It typically runs from early morning until evening.
The ride takes around 90 seconds, and you can ride to the top of the fortress and back down to the city center. We also rode the funicular at the Hallstatt Salt Mine which is around three minutes long!
Walking Uphill
If you prefer a more active approach, you can walk up to the fortress. The walk takes about 20 to 30 minutes and starts from the same area near Kapitelplatz. It’s a bit steep, but the path is well-maintained and offers scenic views along the way.
From Kapitelplatz, follow the signs leading to the fortress. The path is paved but can be steep in places, so be prepared for a bit of a workout. This option allows you to enjoy the surroundings at your own pace.
Tourist Train
During peak tourist seasons, a small train (called the “Panorama Train”) sometimes operates between Salzburg’s Old Town and the fortress. This can be a comfortable and fun alternative, especially for families with children or those who prefer not to walk.
I also captured this gorgeous view above of the fortress from the gardens at Schloss Mirabel. We walked from our hotel near the train station and passed through the gardens on our way to the historic city center. The snow is a beautiful addition to our trip! It was cold, but it made for a great experience.

Regular Hours:

Tickets
Hohensalzburg Fortress offers several types of tickets, depending on what you want to see and experience during your visit.

All-Inclusive Ticket: Adult ticket is around €16.30. It includes everything in the basic admission ticket and access to the princely chambers, the Magic Theatre and the Regency Rooms.
Salzburg Card Holders: If you have the Salzburg Card, entry to Hohensalzburg Fortress is included, along with many other attractions in Salzburg. The Salzburg Card also covers the cost of the funicular ride up to the fortress.
