Massachusetts Travel Guide
Planning a trip to Massachusetts? Whether you want to walk the historic streets of Boston, escape to Cape Cod, explore ivy-covered campuses, or chase fall foliage in the Berkshires, this New England state has something for every traveler.
I put together this Massachusetts travel guide to help you plan your trip—from city breaks to charming towns, seasonal tips, and personal highlights.
Boston: Must-See Sights, Tips & Itineraries
Boston is one of the most walkable and history-packed cities in the U.S. I’ve visited during October hoping for peak fall colors, but the New England weather can be full of surprises—it was almost summer-like when I went! (So yes, I definitely overpacked cozy sweaters that never got worn.😅)
If Boston is on your itinerary, start here:
- 🚇 Getting Around Boston: What You Need to Know – Tips for the T, walking routes, and getting from the airport.
- 🗓️ 3 Days in Boston: The Ultimate Itinerary – A perfect mix of history, food, and waterfront strolls.
- 🏙️ 1 Day in Boston: What Not to Miss – Ideal for quick stops or cruise travelers.
We stayed at the Hilton Boston Park Plaza, which is central and walkable to many attractions.
Some of my favorite things to do in Boston:
- The Freedom Trail (especially lovely on a sunny day!)
- An afternoon exploring Harvard’s campus
- A casual stroll through MIT (yes, science has a vibe)
- Soaking up city parks—even if the leaves were still green!
Explore Beyond Boston
While Boston is the heart of Massachusetts, don’t skip the rest of the state if you have time to explore:

Travel Tips for Visiting Massachusetts
Here are a few tips from my own travel mishaps (and wins):
- Book hotels early for fall foliage season – Prices rise fast in October.
- Weather is unpredictable – October might still feel like August, so pack layers.
- Public transit is solid – Especially in Boston. The T can take you almost anywhere.
- Walking is the best way to explore – Especially in historic neighborhoods like Beacon Hill and Back Bay.

Salem
While we were staying in Boston, we also took a day trip to Salem.
I have always wanted to visit Salem in October for spooky season. I put together a list of things to do during Halloween in Salem.
If you’re fans of Hocus Pocus, then be sure to visit all the filming locations while you’re there!
