The Palace of Versailles is a bucket list experience for anyone visiting France — but let’s be honest, the long lines can quickly turn magical daydreams into mid-morning meltdowns.

1. Book Your Tickets Online in Advance

One of the simplest ways to avoid lines is to book your tickets ahead of time. Purchase tickets through the official Versailles website or trusted third-party vendors. This allows you to bypass the ticket line and head straight to the entrance.

Recommended Tickets

  • Timed Entry Tickets: Choose a specific time slot to ensure quick access.
  • Passport Tickets: Includes access to the palace, gardens, Trianon Estate, and fountain shows.

2. Arrive Early or Visit Late

The Palace of Versailles opens at 9 AM, and the gardens open earlier at 8 AM. Arriving before the opening time can help you beat the crowds. Alternatively, consider visiting later in the afternoon when the morning rush has subsided.

3. Visit on a Weekday

Weekends and holidays are the busiest times at Versailles. For a quieter experience, plan your trip on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, avoiding Mondays when the palace is closed and nearby attractions funnel more visitors to the site.

5. Opt for a Guided Tour

6. Explore the Gardens and Estate First

If you arrive during a busy time, consider starting with the gardens, Grand Trianon, or Petit Trianon, which typically have shorter lines. You can then circle back to the main palace later in the day.

📸 Best Views: At Versailles, head to the Apollo Fountain or walk up toward the Grand Canal for sweeping views of the palace framed by nature. If you have the time, rent a rowboat for a unique angle of the gardens. It’s not as great as the view of Schonbrunn Palace from the Gloriette, but it is very pretty!

7. Visit During Off-Peak Season

For the best chance to avoid crowds altogether, visit Versailles during the off-season (November through March). The cooler weather brings fewer tourists, making it easier to explore at your own pace.

While I visited in February, the line was still very long. But it was raining AND we didn’t have an umbrella… so we didn’t get to explore too much of the gardens.
