House on the Rock in Wisconsin: A Wonderfully Weird Experience

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to step inside the mind of a whimsical inventor, a collector with no limits, and maybe just a hint of a mad genius.. welcome to the House on the Rock. It is one of the most interesting places I’ve ever been to in my life.

Located in Spring Green, Wisconsin, this one-of-a-kind attraction is part museum, part fantasy world, and part “wait… what did I just see?”

Created by Alex Jordan Jr., the House on the Rock began as a personal retreat in the 1940s.

Over the decades, it transformed into a sprawling maze of rooms, collections, and architectural oddities that defy explanation. It’s not just a house—it’s an experience, and it’s best approached with an open mind (and comfortable shoes).

What to Expect When You Visit

The tour is divided into three sections, and you’ll want to give yourself several hours to explore. The first section showcases the original house, with its low ceilings, dim lighting, and dramatic views of the Wisconsin countryside.

The second and third sections take you deeper into Jordan’s bizarre collections: massive mechanical music machines, dollhouses, vintage toys, circus memorabilia, model ships, and one of the world’s largest indoor carousels—complete with hundreds of ornate animals (and not a single horse).

And then there’s the Infinity Room, a glass-walled walkway that stretches out 218 feet over the valley, tapering to a point with no visible support beneath it. Whether you find it exhilarating or slightly vertigo-inducing, it’s an unforgettable moment.

Final word:
You don’t just visit the House on the Rock—you experience it. And once you have, you’ll either be telling everyone you know to go… or trying to explain why you still can’t quite put it into words.

If you plan to visit, then be sure to add a visit to the Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin Preservation on your trip.
